Pronghorn Lake, Oregon
This 125-acre lake in Southern Oregon is truly a gem. Starry nights, dinner cooked on the grill, and sharing a campfire with friends reminds one of distant memories of a simpler life. Pronghorn Lake offers a pristine retreat off the grid and is the perfect setting for a group with two cabins included in the fishing fee. They are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis.
The lake was stocked with steelhead last fall, this spring, and most recently last week. Plenty of trout are available to challenge your angling skills.
After excellent fishing at Crittenden (click here to read about it), I returned to Oregon to fish Pronghorn Lake. However, my first day at Pronghorn was tough fishing. I got on the lake after the early morning bite and storm front winds the previous day put the trout down.
On the second day the bite turned around. Hard-hitting and aggressive trout took the fly on the strip. I enjoyed great fishing conditions with a light chop, low light, and 58-degree water temperatures. A feeding frenzy started at 7:45 a.m. and continued nonstop until 9 a.m.
The rest of the day I fished the west side between the feeders and south end of the lake. Steelhead between 18-20 inches with a few large Kamloops trout held over from last year’s planting kept my reel singing. Some small bass and large crappie also found their way to my net, but mostly I landed steelhead.
Since the water was slightly stained, for maximum visibility I used my white, burnt orange, and burgundy Predator Buggers. By the end of the day I had landed 26 trout.
Another load of trout was planted the day after I left, so the odds of landing some nice fish the rest of this year should be good.
Call or email me if you have any questions on fishing this lake. I had a great day, and Pronghorn should continue to offer excellent fishing well up to ice up.
